Anatomic Pathology
- Breast pathology: Analysis of tissue from the breast to diagnose breast disease, including cancer
- Cytopathology: Microscopic examination of individual cells to detect disease
- Dermatopathology: Analysis of tissue from the skin
- Endocrine pathology: Looks at diseases of the endocrine system, including the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas and adrenal glands
- Head and neck pathology: Looks at diseases of the oral cavity and throat, jaws, salivary glands, nose and sinuses, larynx, and ears
- Gastrointestinal and liver pathology: Analysis of tissue from the gastrointestinal tract to identify diseases of the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small bowel, colon and rectum, liver, bile ducts, gallbladder and pancreas
- Gynecologic pathology: Analysis of tissue from the female reproductive system
- Hematopathology: Analysis to detect diseases affecting the blood, lymph nodes and bone marrow
- Molecular pathology: Analysis of molecules within organs, tissues or body fluids; this emerging discipline is used in testing for leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumors, cancer predisposition, and a number of hematologic mutations associated with disease
- Pulmonary pathology: Analysis of lung tissue
- Surgical pathology: Analysis of solid tissues removed from patients during surgery or a biopsy; this evaluation typically includes a “gross” (seen by the naked eye) evaluation as well as a “microscopic” (viewed under a microscope) evaluation
- Urologic pathology: Analysis of tissue from the urinary and urogenital tract
Clinical Pathology
- Coagulation/thrombosis: Testing to understand the clotting of blood; a deficiency leads to increased risk of bleeding (hemorrhage), while excessive clotting leads to thrombosis (blood clots)
- Flow cytometry: The use of antibodies to diagnose leukemias and lymphomas
- Hematology: Analysis of the blood and diseases of the blood
- Immunology: Analysis of the way the immune system works in the body, including allergies, resistance to disease, and acceptance or rejection of foreign tissue
- Microbiology/parasitology: Analysis of microscopic organisms and parasites.
- Renal pathology: Analysis of tissue from the kidneys, particularly in transplant cases
- Transfusion medicine: Guides transfusion decisions and selection of most compatible blood for patients. Spectrum Pathology offers a blood management program that has been successfully implemented at hospitals throughout Maine.
